Description Paper Topic and Sources (Due Sunday 12/26 night) & Paper Outline (Due 12/30 night) & Final Paper (Due 1/5 night) The first major assignment for the paper is picking a paper topic (the paper product is a product or family of products). Pick a product that interests you and where you can find a source on chemistry role in the product and one impact of the product on society. For example, solar panels is a broad topic. One might pick a single chemical used in solar panels (cadmium telluride) and a single impact on society (toxic waste from solar panel production). One would not want to list every impact of solar panels or every chemical used to make them. Fewer topics gives more space for details. You only have 450 words for each section. Below is some information about the paper that I hope will help you pick a topic. You will give your topic and about two sentences each on the introduction, the chemistry section, and the society section. You will also provide 3 sources (just web links are fine). Be aware that the chemistry and society sections are required for the paper. So as you pick a topic, think about how you will complete each section. ** Paper Topic We are expecting you to select a paper topic and at least 3 sources that will ultimately lead to an approximately 1300 word paper. The paper topic should be a product (something one can buy or make). A family of products is completely fine as well (golf balls as opposed to Titleist Velocity golf balls). The sections to address in your paper topic post are the Introduction, Chemistry’s Role in Your Product and Your Product and Society. These sections are specified in more detail below (Final Paper sections) and you should read that section before selecting a topic. Please state the product you want to choose and include a sentence or two about how you will address each section of the paper (3 to 6 sentences total). Please remember you should pick one role of chemistry and one impact on society. A 1500 word max paper is not a place to talk about everything known about the product that you select. You need to be specific. For the golf ball example, you may talk about the chemistry of a polymer used to make golf balls (not every chemical used in golf balls). For the society section you may talk about golf in the health of senior citizens (instead of listing all the ways golf and golf courses impact society). This is just one example of how to focus the topic. Pick what interests you, but keep it narrow enough to have space for details. The final paper will require 5 sources, but you are only required to find 3 sources by the topic selection date. Essentially think about how you will write each section with the topic you select and find at least one source that will help you write each section (for 3 sources, focus on one source for introduction, one for chemistry’s role and one for your product and society).
