You are trying to find out what kind of communication is common in the field you intend to enter. So, you’ll be researching the types/forms of communication, the content (what are they communicating about), the purposes or reasons why communication is happening, and the audiences to whom people in your field communicate with.
For example, if you were interested in becoming a doctor, you would likely find that one form of communication is the medical record or chart. This is primarily a document for other medical folk but it is also increasingly being read by patients themselves.
A primary source is a first-hand, immediate account of a topic from people who have a direct connection (e.g., an interview). A secondary source is one step removed. It often quotes or uses primary sources and can cover the same topic (e.g., most books about a topic, analysis of data, scholarly article about a topic, documentaries). As the assignment sheet says, you can use both kinds of sources. You just are not required to use primary sources
