Watch at least some of the youtube clips documenting the 2000 anti-globalization protests in Seattle and Prague. Read all three of the articles on the Anti-Globalization Protests, the Atlantic article: Does Protest Even Work?, and the Teaching Globalization in the time of Trump. Then answer the following questions:
1. What reasons do people have for being opposed to globalization, on both the left & right sides of the political spectrum?
2. What were the main motivations, tactics, and goals of the anti-globalization protestors? Were they legitimate? Do they make sense to you in terms of what you’ve learned about the costs & benefits of Globalization so far? Do you think they were successful, in retrospect, and in the big picture at (a) raising awareness of the problems associated with corporate globalization? (b) actually changing business as usual? (c) other accomplishments?
3. Have you ever been to a protest, of any kind? Why/why not? What is your first reaction when you hear about protests in the news? The Atlantic article is over two years old now… have things changed? If it were 1999/2000, would you be interested in attending those anti-globlization protests?
4. What do you think the anti-globlization sentiment associated with the Trump campaign has in common with the anti-globalization sentiment of those 1999/2000 anti-globlization activists?
