This is the first of the two summative papers. This paper covers the materials up to the midterm exam.
First, write a paragraph reflecting on the overall THEME or THEMES of the course materials so far. Both readings and videos that you’ve studied focus on the period of the transition of China from the Qing to the Republic. Out of these sources, point out a theme that threads through many of the key events that contributed to making China become modern.
For the rest of the paper, follow through the theme you have selected and articulated, and elaborate. Use concrete evidence, such as events and people, to describe and analyze what happened and why, and how these happenings contributed to China’s movement toward modernity, albeit with a great deal of hesitation, reluctance, and resistance.
1000 words of content minimum, and try not to exceed 1500 words. Please use in-text citations (e.g. (Mitter, 28)). You can use footnotes or endnotes if you choose to. The paper needs to be submitted in WORD or as a pdf file.
Rubric:
1. The theme is clearly stated, insightful and original. The choice of the theme must reflect a comprehensive understanding of the course materials covered so far in class.
2. Elaboration is well developed, clearly explaining the theme with supportive evidence from the course materials. Please use quotes and references judiciously: they should not be too long, taking up too much space; and they should be used to illustrate and support your points. Please do not forget to include in-text citation (e.g. (Zarrow, 34). Course materials have to be clearly reflected in your paper.
3. A conclusion sums up your argument, which is consistence with your chosen theme and elaboration/explanation. You can further discuss your theme and indicate its limit.
4. No plagiarism is tolerated. If you use an outside source, give full citation to the source. The paper is checked automatically by Turnitin, a tool that helps instructor to catch plagiarism, and to show lack of originality.
