This is a critical examination of parental behavior for the purposes of identifying the style adopted by
parents in raising their children. You are to select a parent you know (YOU ARE OBSERVING ONLY ONE
PARENT, THAT IS THE 12 EXAMPLES ARE OF THAT ONE PARENT WITH ONE CHILD). YOU CANNOT USE
YOUR PARENT AND THEIR INTERACTION WITH YOU. They can be your own parents with a sibling,
relatives, friends, or a parent with whom you are well acquainted, e.g., if you are a nanny. THE CHILD
MUST BE AT LEAST ONE YEAR OLD. Read pages 182-183. The text identifies three primary styles in
Table 6.1 on page 182 that are assessed along four dimensions: warmth and support, discipline
6
(restrictiveness), expectations for maturity (demands for maturity) and communication (communication
ability). There is also a fourth style discussed as well. The parenthetical labels listed above are
Baumrind’s original titles. Additional styles can be found in icollege in the module labeled parental
style. These additional styles are formatted in a similar table that includes 6 styles. Using the four
dimensions, you will document at least three instances of each dimension to use in assessing the style of
the parents. Each instance must be specific, i.e., it must describe a behavior of a parent. For example, if
you are describing communication between a mom and her son, you should relate it as follows: “son is
discussing a problem at school with his teacher, but his mom talks over him and interrupts him. She
repeatedly invalidates his comments, putting the blame on him.
The final paper should include the following sections: introduction, parental behaviors, analysis and
conclusion. The content of each section is as follows:
? Introduction – describe your subjects, including age, appearance and the various settings from
which you collected your data.
? Parental behaviors – all twelve examples, ie., three for each dimension
? Analysis – type of style adopted by the parents given the behaviors you have identified
? Conclusion – depiction of the quality of the parent/child relationship, contributing factors of the
child to the style adopted by the parents and impact on the development of the child.
