This activity is designed to give the student an opportunity to discuss topics such as why substance misuse and SUDs are legitimate problems for society, to understand why individuals may use alcohol and/or drugs, to identify the impact substances can have on the body, to describe those who encounter and treat individuals with SUDs, and to identify the most efficacious ways to treat SUDs. Please select a discussion topic below.
Please be honest and insightful with your writing. The content of your entries will be graded accordingly with the assignment. Discussions must be at least two (2) pages each and written in a narrative format using a 12-Point, Times New Roman font with one-inch margins and double spacing. Only the instructor will review your discussions.
Discussion Topics for Module 2: Chapters 15-28
1. Does the majority of the population have the right to make laws regulating the minority who smoke? Before you answer this, consider that the vast majority of those who smoke are addicted to nicotine. Does this fact influence your answer? Why or why not?
2. What current (within the last five years) statistics comparing SUDs in men and women can you find? Is the percentage of women with a SUD approaching that of men, or is it just that society is able to recognize such problems now?
3. What factors influence college students substance use behaviors and how do college students decide where to draw the line between acceptable substance use and substance use behaviors they will not engage in?
4. What factors influenced your substance use behaviors when you first went to college?
5. A person who is codependent is often described as one who is overly dependent on others for his or her sense of self-worth. Where do you believe the boundary between a healthy and a codependent relationship lies? What behaviors fall close to this boundary line?
6. Are people with high self-esteem more productive than people with low self-esteem? Do you believe those with high self-esteem are more likely to develop a SUD? How could self-esteem either protect them or trap them?
