Compare/Contrast Essay Notes and Requirements
Comparison is when one shows the similarities between multiple items.
Contrast is when one shows the differences between multiple items.
For this essay, you will be discussing BOTH similarities AND differences. You should discuss TWO similarities AND TWO differences between any two poems we discussed in this unit.
The final publish should be 700 words. If your final publish is fewer than 700 words, you will lose points off your grade. If your final publish is fewer than 600 words, it will not be accepted, and you will receive a zero for the paper.
Organizing this essay should be done in a point-by-point method of discussion. Your essay should be organized as follows: (NOTE: Below is a sample outline NOT an essay. You need to submit an actual essay for review.)
Introduction
Background information introducing the author and poems you will be discussing.
Thesis statement – What are you trying to prove about ONE of these poems? (NOTE: Your thesis statement should NOT say, “I am going to compare (contrast) these two poems.” OR “I will show the similarities and differences between…” Your 3-4 similarities or differences are your supporting points, not what you want to prove. Your thesis statement could state your ultimate opinion on which one may be better or more effective based on your 3-4 supporting points.

Conclusion
Harlem” by Langston Hughes
What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore—
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over—
like a syrupy sweet?
Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.
Or does it explode?
The Power of a Smile” by Tupac Shakur
The power of a gun can kill
and the power of fire can burn
the power of wind can chill
and the power of a mind can learn
the power of anger can rage
inside until it tears u apart
but the power of a smile
especially yours can heal a frozen heart
