The midterm examination is a moment for you to work from a number of different parts of the
class. It is an opportunity to review the lecture, your notes, the reading materials, and primary
sources to craft an essay that demonstrates an understanding of an historic/political/social
issue and provides a serious analysis. Remember you must have: (1) a clear thesis statement,
(2) provide the reader a clear sense of the direction of the essay and then (3) build out from
that foundation. Midterm exam that is a take home essay (4-5 pages, double-spaced, 12-point font) based upon lectures, primary sources, and material found in either the American Yawp. The essay must be in MLA format, including a separate page for sources. Remember you must have: (1) a clear thesis statement,
(2) provide the reader a clear sense of the direction of the essay and then (3) build out from
that foundation.
