OVERVIEW: The Educational Autobiography requires students to interrogate how and what they were taught about nonhuman animals, human-animal relations, and animal ethics. The aim of this assignment is to craft a personal narrative regarding ones formative educational experiences about animals. Sources of education can range from the formal, such as public or private school, to the more informal, such as parents, mentors, media, and animals themselves. The point is to ask, what were some of my key educational experiences regarding other animals? How did I come to know animals in certain ways? What specific events or particular lessons stood out for me in my trajectory? How have my ideas about nonhuman animals changed over time? Why? Crucially, what did I think and feel about these experiences? Students should consider a broad range of time, as opposed to just concentrating on the last few years of ones life. The assignment should not be written as detached journalism, but rather as an explicitly subjective account, in which students situate themselves in their individual histories. The goal is to trace how we (believe we) come to adopt particular understandings and social constructions of nonhuman animals. As part of the autobiography, students should incorporate some commentary on the Week 2 Robinson interview which is attached below, demonstrating the application of at least two major concepts or significant points.
