The requirements of these narratives intend to demonstrate understanding of sex, gender, and society through the lens of sociology. Students will choose two of the course learning objectives listed below and then provide evidence from the course readings, lectures, discussions, and/or assignments to demonstrate their understanding and comprehension of the course material in relation to the chosen objectives. 1. Identify and describe the meanings of group identities and the processes of group development across a range of historical periods and cultures.
2. Apply and analyze theories of gender role development.
3. Identify and explain historical and contemporary social problems related to sex and gender, as well as the institutions designed to address each issue.
4. Develop and communicate solutions to the contemporary problems associated with sex, gender, and sexual orientation.
5. Develop and apply solutions to contemporary social problems associated with sex and gender.
6. Analyze their own attitudes, behaviors, and beliefs regarding the intersection of different statuses, such as social class, race, and sex and gender. NARRATIVE REQUIREMENTS
Begin with a short overview of the narrative. Discussion of why this class was chosen or students outlook on sex, gender, and sexuality prior to taking the course may be included. (5 points)
Next, discuss the learning objectives chosen and connections to course material. Summaries of any course readings should reflect original interpretations using a sociological perspective as well as proper in-text citations of sources. Students may reference the course readings, class discussions, videos, as well as brief examples from class assignments but the bulk of this essay should be original work. At least two examples from each unit must be referenced and clearly identified. Any sources used need to be cited in APA format (which requires in-text citations as well as an alphabetized works cited page at the end of the essay). (35 points)
The conclusion of the essay should include how this assignment contributes to a greater sociological understanding of sex, gender, sexuality, and society. (5 points)
At least three pages is the expected length. Narratives that are not three full pages will lose points (exceeding three pages is completely acceptable) as well as submissions that do not contain proper grammar, spelling, citations and reference page (if necessary). (5+ points)
