Research Question Assignment
There are two kinds of questions: Opinion questions and Factual questions. For a research paper, you will need to start developing your focus by writing an opinion question for your topic.
An opinion question allows the person who is replying, the flexibility to choose their point of view. A factual question requires the person replying to provide the information requested.
Below is a step-by-step method to help you develop your research question.
Example:
Topic: Marijuana
Theme: Legalization (Find a focus for your topic for a better focus.)
Your new focused topic:
Legalization of Marijuana
Potential Questions:
Should marijuana be legalized for recreational use? (Opinion Question. Can be a great research focus.)
What kind of potential harm can the legalization of marijuana cause? (Factual Question. Not good research question)
Is legalization of marijuana beneficial? (Opinion Question. Great research question.)
How does the legalization of marijuana benefit Americans? (Factual Question. Not a good research question.)
Using the steps above, turn in your focused topic and a research question that you would like to research and find answers to. Be sure that you are turning in an opinion question and not a factual question.
