Research Project/Final Exam
Persuasive Essay (Final Exam) Submission
Please review posted lectures and reminders posted under “Announcements” for more details.
Submit a well written argument essay that meets the following criteria:
I HATE assigning a number of pages, but it’s necessary: Each paragraph must be at least ten (10) sentences, and the paper must be at least three (3) pages, excluding the “Works Cited” page.
Very Important: The essay must follow all MLA format rules. I cannot stress the importance of this requirement.
*ALL research/sources must be a part of the Alabama Virtual Library (AVL) system. You have a link in your Canvas module. Familiarize yourself with this system early. You cannot use random sources like blogs, Wikkiedia, and certainly no social media, blog, or chat sites.
Topics: Choose a topic is arguable, a topic that’s highly debatable in society, whether politics, medicine, or social practices. Even more important: The AVL must support this topic with credible research that allows you to argue for or against this topic within an academic context.
*Students must submit a topic for approval (be prepared to explain how the argument will be shaped) to instructor via email no later than April 8, 2022.
*The instructor must approve your topic in advance. Again, the instructor must approve the topic.
*Introduction must “introduce,” not give excessive details, forecasting.
*Create a clear thesis that takes a clear position on a topic. The thesis must be the last sentence in the introduction, and must reflect the traditional format discussed:
**a complete sentence
**a structure that names the topic and then notes three specific, parallel structured elements/dimensions/aspects of the topic
*Without a clear thesis, the reader (and the grader) has no direction, no map to follow; this also means the student did not follow instructions.
*the essay must clearly argue one side/opinion/position of the topic. The writer cannot stand “in the middle of the road” on this topic.
*A clear topic sentence already cited in the thesis must begin each paragraph; the topic sentences must occur in the order presented in the
thesis.
*Each paragraph must include one reference, all of which must follow the MLA writing rule(s). This can be a quote or a citation.
*The essay must include appropriate transitions that move readers from paragraph and idea to idea.
*The essay must have NO or a minimum of the language in “What Not to Write,” i.e. cliches, slang, “thing,” trendy language, etc. The instructor has stressed this dimension of academic writing all term, so trendy language, no forms of “thing,” and similar writing should not appear in the last assignment of t his term.
*Paper must follow all research rules as cited.
*The “Works Cited” page must, must, must appear exactly as directed and shown in the posted lectures.
*The instructor must approve your topic. do NOT write on topics not approved, and do NOT write surface, superficial, “freestyle” points.
*Create a conclusion that gives a slight review, one that reminds readers of key points.
*You can use the “Research Paper Check List” to review your final publish (before submitting).
Topics: Students can choose the topic, but it must be approved by the instructor prior to writing. While the topic is important, the thesis is even more important. For example, if “immigration” is the topic, what’s the thesis, or what’s the point/main statement/position about immigration? Research must support the topic, and if the student discovers an abundance of research that opposes his/her original position, then change the position.
VERY IMPORTANT: Do NOT plagiarize. Write your own paper, and follow instructions on how to document. IF you have questions, contact the instructor. Remember that Canvas “flags” all papers that have been submitted to any website at any time. Plagiarizing can result in a “0” grade for the final exam. Thank you and I wish you well.
