Write a short analytical paper comparing both authors’ arguments. You will compare the authors’ intended audiences, claims, and rhetorical strategies to make a conclusion about the persuasive quality of each argument. I have chosen texts that share somewhat similar views on the issue so that you can focus on how the authors put forth their arguments rather than what they say. Your own opinion about the validity of the authors’ claims is less relevant to this assignment than your ability to parse the components that make up the arguments.
Here are some guiding questions to get you started:
1. What assumptions does each author make about their intended audience?
2. What is each writer’s message to their audience?
3. Analyse each author’s rhetorical strategies, claims, and evidence:
a. Are their claims adequately supported with evidence?
b. Is the evidence from a credible source?
c. Do they rely on a specific mode of persuasion?
4. Are one author’s persuasive techniques more effective? How so? If you believe both authors are equally persuasive on the topic, explain why.
