READ 2 poems by Patrizia Cavalli (“But first one must free oneself,” “Now that the time
seems all mine”)
• READ 3 poems by Sharon Olds (“mortal eternal,” “19,” “warrior: 5th grade”)
• READ 1 poem by Matthew Siegel (“Do I Feel Like a Man Yet?”)
• READ 1 poem by Michael Blouin (“Flying Somehow”)
After reading the above poems, choose 2-3 poems above by at least 2
different authors, and post a reading response (180-word minimum) comparing these poems to
each other and interpreting their possible meaning.
•
If you’re finding it difficult to figure out a meaning, focus instead on what SOME of the
poem’s lines might mean, especially lines that you personally think have a strong
emotion or image.
• Before reading the poems, you may find it easier to print them out, so that you can circle
with a pen particular lines or images that stand out to you. Marking up what you’re
reading assists your comprehension
