Prompt: In some counseling situations, there are more complex decisions that have to be made about treatment other than just which treatment approach to apply. In our discussion example, let’s consider that we are working with a 17 year old female client who is significantly restricting her activities and behavior in response to feelings of guilt. The source of her guilt is a preoccupying thought that God is watching her daily choices, and sees her many imperfections. In response, she will often redo homework assignments, chores at home, and has trouble sleeping because of a nightly “review of shortcomings” that she puts herself through when lying in bed at night. This client is involved in youth activities in her religious congregation, and used to attend religious school but now attends public high school. As part of your cognitive therapy treatment, you need to discuss cognitive distortion with her. In your initial discussion response, 1) describe how you would talk to her about her particular thinking distortions and how they are affecting her, but without crossing the boundary of religious theology. In other words, the distortions must be addressed but without statements about whether or not she is actually being observed spiritually, and also, without bringing up any religious belief of your own, and 2) end your initial post with a sentence or two about whether or not it was difficult to know how to approach this counseling task without bringing personal religious belief into the discussion.
