Because the law requires archaeological surveys before building projects an amazing discovery was made in Colorado a few years ago. A Pueblo pit house believed to be around 1200 years old while a new road was under construction. There were human remains found at the site which made many local natives feel that this project was invading on their history and culture. This site was found among an area heavy with other cultural sites and any plans to reroute were to land on another historical/cultural site. This was a very sensitive excavation but all things considered it seems as though the locals were involved in consulting and as much information was preserved as possible. I believe although it was sad to have destroyed the beautiful ceremonial pits the excavation was handled as best as it could be. I believe the archaeologists were successful in preserving the history of the site while respecting current Natives and also understanding a need for the new road. Unfortunately situations like this come up from time to time and thanks to CRM there is someone to mitigate and balance these at times difficult situations. That being said, I still find this situation very sad and frustrating but its so much better than what archaeology has been in the past and I hope Archaeology continues to improve in this fashion.
