This week, we are only reading one story, but we will be spending quite a bit of time and energy unpacking the layers of it.
I have a link here to a biographical video that I think is important to watch before reading O’Connor’s story. Many teachers warn not to let an author’s life influence how you interpret the story she writes. I, though, think it can be quite helpful, especially in this case! The discussion board will be a bit different this week. It requires you to read an essay by Flannery O’Connor in which she explains some of the elements of her story, including the presence of violence and its function. I really like it! I did not understand the story on nearly as many levels before reading her insights! So, after reading her story, please access her essay about it here: “On Her Own Work”. After reading the essay, you will be ready to engage in the discussion board.
