Picture Book Paper
For this assignment, you are to demonstrate your understanding of picture story books and how they work to create meaning by analyzing a picture story book (one that includes both text and illustrations that are integral to the telling of the story, not just an illustrated book). Using class discussion information as well as the handout with Perry Nodelmans and Molly Bangs ideas, consider the following questions: How do the words and pictures complement each other? How do the pictures advance the story beyond the boundaries of the text? How do Nodelmans and/or Bangs principles help you discover more about the artistry of the books?
Be sure that you do more than merely DESCRIBE the pictures or SUMMARIZE the story. Assume your reader has read the book; your purpose is not to retell the story but instead to comment upon the story and artistry of the pictures and how together, they create meaning. Make sure to reference Bang and Nodelman specifically as you do your close reading. According to Bang, the edges of the picture are like the edge of the world, so when Maxs imagination is triggered, the trees and ocean extend beyond the edge of his immediate world into a whole new one, as represented by the way the trees and ocean go off of the page.
Please include a close reading of a page or double-spread from the book. Please email me a photo or scan of the page(s) for which you have done the close reading. It is important that I see the colors and full spread of the pages that you have chosen.
Think about the elements of line, color, space, composition, medium, plot, style, symbolism, character, setting and theme.
Your paper is to be at least 3 pages long. It can and probably will be longer than that, but it must be 3 full pages in order to receive a C grade.
At the beginning of your paper, please identify the books title, author/ illustrator, publisher, and publication date. If you know it, give the approximate cost. Also identify the media used, type of book, and the size of the book. How many pages are there? (Sixteen pages are average for a picture book.) What age level is this book appropriate for?
You will want to be very specific in your close reading of the page(s) and use placement terms and exact shades of color. Use similes or metaphors if you are stuck for words to get across the exact hue. For example, dont simply say, The ground is brown. Instead, say The ground is a warm coffee. Or The ground is the comforting and familiar brown of freshly baked bread. When you analyze, you need to be answering the question so? What is the effect or result of having the ground be brown? In the second sample sentence I imply the connection of the brown with familiarity and comfort. Remember, there isnt necessarily a right and wrong way to read the booksyou bring your material to your analysis. But, do stretch yourself to explore, to be creative as you examine the books for meaning. Really think about our assumptions about colors, for example. Pay attention to Nodelman and Bangs principles.
Papers are to follow MLA format. When quoting from the picture book, you should use quotation marks and note the page number in parentheses. Introduce quotes with who is speaking or at the very least some sort of indicator of where the quote is coming from, such as: The text reads, Blah
.. (6). You need not use any outside sources, but if you do, they must be cited properly and you need to create a Works Cited page and include a xerox copy of the pages used from your source. Ultimately, your essay should promote a greater understanding of the author/illustrators technique and design as well as the books complexity.
Below I will leave an example of an essay of this type and I will also leave the image that will be used for this essay.
In addition, I will also leave the paper called pictorial dynamics that should be used to create this essay.
