Introduction to Africana Studies Fall 2022
Midterm Examination
Due Date: Oc 6th
Analytic Essay: This essay should be analytic, thus answering a question by using course readings and/or outside sources. Citations are required. A minimum of 4 course readings must be cited.
Plagiarism: You are expected to write your responses in your own words. Do not copy anything from another source without the required citation. Incorporate sources from this course and outside courses into your essay. You may use your own personal notes as well as relevant scholarly sources.
Citations: Cite key published sources on which you base your answers. For example, give the authors (or authors) last name(s) and year of publication.
Format: Answer the examination question in 1300 words. Use the formatting style of your major (eg. APA). The formatting must be consistent throughout the entirety of the essay.

Choose 1 question to answer:
1. Slavery as a racial and gendered institution dehumanized and also ungendered (created the idea that Black women arent really women) Black women. Black women have historically been forced to choose between a feminist movement or the anti-racist movement, which neither fully accounted for them. Use this historical understanding of Black womanhood and discuss contemporary violence towards Black women, specifically police violence towards Black women and Black mens violence towards Black women.

2. Recent reports and studies find that police violence is a leading cause of death among young Black men ages 25 to 29, not too far behind the diseases of cancer and heart disease. Describe the social function of violence towards Black bodies.

3. Describe the formation and purpose of Africana Studies as a discipline. Describe Tulane University as an institution and discuss what Africana Studies can offer the university.
