In this assignment, students will prepare a PowerPoint presentation that examines both sides of an ethical and/or legal dilemma in healthcare. The presentation should cover each of the criteria listed below. Students should prepare and use PowerPoint.
Topic: Physician Assisted Suicide
Criteria to be Covered:
Describe the ethical problem. Why is this an ethical issue? How can this issue affect the care given to patients?
Examine the issue from both sides of the dilemma—pro and con.
Identify the ethical principles involved. Define all which apply to your dilemma. State exactly why each principle pertains to the case. Be specific.
List all possible courses of action, e.g. “tell the patient,” “call a code,” “run and hide,” etc. Brainstorm and write down all the interventions you can dream up, whether or not you think you would choose to actually do them.
Describe the course of action you decide upon (your solution to the ethical dilemma). Describe your rationale for choosing this decision and include a detailed discussion of all aspects of the decision.
Incorporate a minimum of four evidence-based references—a minimum of 2 references per pro and 2 per con arguments.
Material should be adequate for a 15-20 min presentation. Consider preparing something of interest to your nursing practice setting that you could present (might fit into your clinical ladder objectives).
Students should include citations of references throughout slides and a reference list at the end of the presentation in 7th ed APA format. Please submit a reference list in a Word Document also for ease of grading.
