In 2-4 pages, please analyze the mystery piece uploaded to Canvas. You can find the score and audio recording under Files > Essay #1 Baroque. Within this folder are two files, Essay #1 Baroque Audio an MP3 file and Essay #1 Baroque Score a PDF. Please download these files and listen to the piece as any times as you need to, print out the score and mark it up, whatever methodology will allow you to best understand the work.
A successful essay will identify the main formal unit of the piece (for our Baroque unit, is this a fugue, concerto grosso, ritornello form, or dance suite?) and then subsequently defend that stance by identifying the sections of the work, the melodic components, and key centers. Unlike the listening journals, this is a formal essay, so appropriate introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusions should be followed. Youre main thesis is whatever form (or multiple forms) you claim this piece is and use the body of the paper to defend that stance and prove to me why!
Please use measure numbers when discussing any elements of the music or defining formal sections. Graphs/charts are welcome, but be sure you have 2 pages of text minimum even if you use a chart or graph to consolidate your analysis.
Your papers should be double spaced, 12-point font, with 1-inch margins.
Please upload your papers as a file, in either PDF, Microsoft Word, or Pages.
