As I am working towards starting my career as a nurse I do believer that employment is closely tied to our identity. As I have gotten older and took on different jobs, and even attempted to start a different career, going through the process is when I realized it wasnt for me. There are many factors that played into my decision to no pursing my career as a surgical technician and become a nurse instead. Socially what I experienced and a lot of the things that I learned hands on that went as unspoken rules of the tech life if thats what you would call it really begin to rub me wrong (Kail & Cavanaugh, 2023). When I dont feel connected to the people I am working with or the job I will always look for a way out. When I initially chose my career it was just because I knew I wanted to be in the medical field I didnt know what exactly I wanted to do until I actually started thinking about what I had a passion for and how involved I wanted to be. I feel I relate more to becoming a nurse because of life experience and the things I have seen take place first hand. Ive always had around me to encourage me on doing something positive with my life and when I dropped out of college the first time my mother still reassured me that once I got back in the motion that I would be more sure about what I wanted to do. Even as an adult my guidance counselor from high school still checks in with me and she talked me through all the necessary steps of deciding on a school and getting started especially because I had my first child my senior year and my path was up and down. Even now working in call centers I am no where near satisfied I just do it because I have to. Catching a break, going out to eat with my friends, game places with my children, or even catching a good nap always refuels me.
