Goal: Students will be able to identify and define a specific musical concept. They will be able to explain how this concept changes in European art music between the Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods.
Format: 350-500 words in length, double-spaced, in 12 pt Times New Roman font. The paper should be organized into paragraphs (3-7 sentences is typical, with one paragraph per major concept/idea). There is no penalty for going marginally over the word count. However, there will be points deducted for being under the word count.
Assignment:
Pick one musical concept: meter/rhythm, texture, or timbre. Define this concept. (Note that meter and rhythm must BOTH be covered if you choose that concept.)
Pick one piece of music from each of the three periods covered so far (Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque).
Give brief background information for each piece (composer if known, performer, and year of publication/release). No more than 100 words maximum.
Explain how your chosen concept functions in each piece.
Compare/contrast the concept’s function in all three pieces.
