From Southern Horrors in the section titled, “The New Cry,” Ida B. Wells writes:
“The mob spirit has grown with the increasing intelligence of the Afro-American. It has left the out-of-the-way places where ignorance prevails, has thrown off the mask and with this new cry stalks in broad daylight in large cities, the centers of civilization, and is encouraged by the “leading citizens” and the press.” (Wells, New Cry).
What is this “New Cry” that Wells writes about? How is it dangerous for all African Americans, not just those who lived in the South? Use at least two examples from Southern Horrors. I would also like you tell me how this subject is discussed in at least two of the documents on U.S. Imperialism (note: most relevant documents: William McKinley’s pro-imperialism speech, William Graham Sumner’s anti-imperialism speech, and/or Rudyard Kipling’s poem “White Man’s Burden”).
