For this assignment, you will use the Learning Resource System to independently research one of the topics below. You will then complete the assignment outside of class and submit it in the final week of class. You will also be asked to discuss your conclusions in the final week of class. Topics: • Congress: Think of an issue of specific importance to you. What, if anything, has Congress done regarding your issue? Has Congress passed a piece of legislation dealing with this topic? What does this legislation say? What committee normally deals with this issue? Is there a bill that hasn’t passed yet, but is stuck somewhere in a congressional committee? What is the expected impact of the legislation? How easy is it for an average citizen to follow a topic through the legislative process? (Students may be directed to the website maintained by the Library of Congress: www.congress.gov.) • Bureaucracy: Engage in an in-depth examination of the working of one bureaucratic agency. Start by visiting www.whitehouse.gov and clicking on the link for “The Administration.” Follow the links provided to “All Offices”—every cabinet department, federal agency, commission, and government corporation. Think of an issue of specific importance to you. What agency (or agencies) deals with your issue? What programs has that agency implemented to deal with your issue? What statements has the agency made concerning your issue? Have the programs been considered successful? Why or why not? What is your opinion of how the bureaucracy has dealt with your issue? Additional materials are available through the LRS to investigate and respond to the research prompt. Make sure to take advantage of the different resources the LRS offers (including websites, magazines, and LIRN) in your investigation. Research the topics above, then write a report and/or present to the class, in a 5–10 minute presentation.
