For this assignment, you are asked to write about two chapters of Five-Finger Discount. Your job is to show how they are related. At least one of the chapters should be from the second half of the book (Chapters 11 through 20). So, no, you can’t write about the relationship of Chapter 1 and Chapter 2. But you could write about the relationship of, say, Chapter 1 and Chapter 11.
The idea is to link the two chapters in a meaningful way by seeing the second of the two chapters as an extension or resolution of a theme or issue or characterization that is introduced in the earlier one. Your goal should be to write analytically about both chapters while sustaining an argument about their connection. Let me give you an example. In Chapter 10, “Bad Boy,” we are introduced to Helene’s distant cousin George, the bad boy of the title. George is contrasted to another cousin Stephen, a good boy. Helene admits to feeling a strange attraction to George’s “bad boy” qualities and wonders whether her grandmother Pauline felt similarly attracted to her grandfather Beansie. Chapter 18, “Valentine’s Day,” follows up on the earlier chapter by showing the fatal turn that George’s life has taken. George’s story comes to Helene at a time when she has recently returned to New Jersey after having lived in Alaska. We have to wonder why she is inserting this depressing story about her distant cousin’s life of crime at this point of her book. What does she accomplish by doing so?
That’s only an example. You should find your own pairing of chapters to write about. You should also feel free to run the pairing past me. The question I am sure to ask you: What will be your argument?
