Extended Annotated Bibliography Assignment
The purpose of this assignment is to help you learn how to critically evaluate peer-reviewed sources for your research paper. The purpose of this assignment is also to help you be better prepared to write your research paper, so please choose sources that you plan to actually use in your paper. This way, you can actually incorporate parts of this assignment into your actual research paper and use this as a building block for your paper.
Step One: Choose your sources
You must have a total of EIGHT scholarly, peer-reviewed sources.
You may include the one that you already found for your previous assignment as part of the eight.
Follow the same steps that we have already gone over in class and on the library day to find these sources using Alcorns databases.
Step Two: Cite your sources
Include the correctly formatted citation of the article (according to MLA) at the top of the paper.
For guidelines on how to cite using MLA, please use OWL Purdues website.
Step Three: Identify the main thesis (i.e. argument) of each of your sources
Underneath each article citation, paraphrase (this means re-write it in your own words!) the thesis of that article. This should be 1-3 sentences per source.
Include the author last name and page number in parenthesis where you got each thesis because this is the standard MLA in-text citation method that you will be required to follow for your research paper.
Step Four: Paraphrase some of the key points/main ideas of the author in your own words for each of your sources
Summarize the key points/main ideas that the author uses to develop his/her argument. This should be one paragraph per source.
Include the author last name and page number in parenthesis where you got each piece of information because this is the standard MLA in-text citation method that you will be required to follow for your research paper.
Step Five: Evaluate each of your sources
Now you are ready to evaluate each source by answer the following questions. This should be one paragraph per source.
? How does the author position their research in relation to other scholars and/or previous research in the field? Are they building off of, or adding to, previous research? Are they refuting an argument made by a previous scholar? Usually the author will position themselves in relation to other scholars/research in the first few pages of the article. If it is a book, this will often happen in the introduction of the book.
? What specific parts of this article/book do you find most interesting and why?
? How do you plan to use this article/book in your own paper?

4. Include author last name and page numbers in parenthesis, according to MLA citation style, to credit where you got your paraphrased information from for the paraphrased thesis and paraphrased points of the argument.
5. A correctly formatted MLA citation of the source at the top of the paper. Check OWL Purdues website for a review of MLA in-text citation style.

Research Paper Topic:
Health Care Issues for Children and Adolescents in Foster Care and Kinship Care
Article Citation:
Smithfield, Georgia. Health Care Issues for Children and Adolescents in Foster Care andKinship Care. Journal of American Pediatrics, vol 9, no.1, 2015, pp. 1-35.
Article Thesis Statement:
Because foster care children deal with so many issues, that group of kids need specific help from professionals that are experts in things such as childhood trauma. These kids need more frequent check-ups to make sure that they are receiving the right amount of help and the correct type of help (Smithfield 1).
Article Key Ideas:
The article starts out with going into a little depth about the foster care system. Simplifying that the foster care system was built as a safe place for kids that dont have permanent homes. The system is illuded to be this safe haven for kids that are coming from abusive and fragile pasts but, for the most part, kids in the system are worse than when they were first put in (Smithfield 3). Most kids in foster homes face abuse and neglect and a lot of them are exposed to physical and verbal abuse. With these troubling issues that these children face, its important to understand the health needs for these individuals (Smithfield 9). Because health care is limited and subpar, the children and adolescents in foster care continue to deal with their complex traumas. This causes them to do bad in school and lead them to not want to really do anything with their lives. Childhood trauma needs to be resolved because if it isnt it can cause patterns of things such as aggression, impulsivity, poor emotional regulation, etc.. If there is any hope that the care for kids in foster care and their mental health, there needs to be treatment implicated throughout a childs time in foster care (Smithfield 25).
My Evaluation of Article:
One piece of evidence that stood out to me was that more than 70% of children in foster care have a documented history of child abuse and/or neglect, and more than 8% have been exposed to significant levels of violence, including domestic violence (Smithfield 12). Its heartbreaking that in a system built to create security for children that dont have anywhere else to go, they endure pain and abuse. This author is building on previous scholarship on the importance of the foster care system, and she especially cites previous research of Wakefield et. al. However, Smithfield really emphasizes how there needs to be more of a focus on mental health care for foster children. I plan on using this article to help illustrate the importance of getting mental health for children in the foster care system. This article goes into what causes some trauma that those kids face, how the trauma could be addressed and healed, and what happens if the trauma isnt resolved. I believe that this article helps makes one of my arguments in paper stronger.
