Essay Prompt: In a five-paragraph essay, explain how all three Bradbury stories we have read share a common theme.
Introductory Paragraph Example:
Science-fiction author Ray Bradbury often presents a bleak view of
the future in his writing. He describes hostile environments that range from
stark wastelands to African grasslands and humans who follow their own
selfish desires and impulses without considering the well-being of others
For instance, in “There Will Come Soft Rains,” a nuclear blast has left only
one house standing among what was previously a city teeming with life.
The mass casualties associated with the blast eventually include the family
dog – the only creature presumed to have survived the initial explosion –
and the house itself.
Bradbury’s “All Summer in a Day” depicts the
difficulties that may be associated with humans attempting to inhabit other
planets, namely Venus. In the story, a young girl’s challenging encounters
with bullies are compounded by her relatively new status as a resident of
Venus.
In “The Veldt,” a futuristic nursery is transformed from an
entertaining playroom to a threatening landscape based on the thoughts of
its inhabitants. In the story, two children manipulate technology to prevent
their parents from having authority over them.
In each of these stories,
Bradbury emphasizes the theme that all actions lead to consequences.
