Essay Prompt: The Great Gatsby is one of the most frequently read, taught, and discussed novels of the
20th century. Many people consider it one of the Great American Novels, if not the Great
American Novel. Arguably one of the main reasons this novel is so frequently held up as one of
the best examples of American literature is that it gracefully deals with a number of
quintessentially American themes and issues. In a 4 page essay (12-point Times New
Roman font, double-spaced, MLA format), you will present an argument about one of these
themes or issues and what Fitzgerald’s novel has to tell us about that issue’s significance to
American life. To do so, you will need to first find and read two scholarly essays about the
novel. You will then use those essays, as well as the text of the novel itself, to provide evidence
for your own argument.
My two chosen Scholarly essays that I chose: “Race, Repetition, and Desire in the great gatsby” and “Passing For White in the great gatsby”
