Directions: You are going to write a letter to a politician holding office at the local, state, or
national level. Follow the instructions below in order to write a persuasive letter asking for action
to be taken on a problem you feel strongly about. When you are done, download your work as a
PDF and submit it to the dropbox in Blackboard.
1) Pick an issue at the local, state, or national level that you feel strongly about.
2) Identify a problem that you feel needs to be addressed.
What is the problem you have identified? Why is it a problem? Why is this important to you,
personally? The more specific you are in answering these questions, the easier it will be to
write your letter.
3) What is a solution that could be implemented in order to work towards solving the problem?
Consider different ways people are addressing the problem in your chosen year. Why would this
solution work?
4) Now you will use the information considered above and write a letter to the politician asking
them to take action on your problem. What do you want to see them do, and why? You may want
to include information from the text and high-quality outside sources in your answer, but this is
not absolutely necessary.
5) Use the following guidelines to write your letter, attempting to persuade the politician to work
towards the change you want to see.
• Your first paragraph should introduce yourself, your issue, and include a clear statement
as to what you want done (treat this as a thesis statement).
• In the next couple of paragraphs, present arguments as to why the office holder should do
what you want them to do. Follow good writing practices like including well-constructed
paragraphs with clear transitions.
• Your final paragraph should act as a conclusion, restating your demand and the main
points of your argument. You should also thank the office holder for their time.
• Save your letter as a PDF and upload it to the dropbox for this assignment.
