Choose Two (2) Questions to Answer
1) Based on the understanding of Technological Orientalism given in the piece by Roh, Huang, and Niu, specifically, with the idea that orientals are to be deprived of technology lest they misuse it against western culture, how can we interpret any contemporary depiction of your choice of Asian Americans? Choose one of the works we looked at this week and analyze incorporating specific quotes or filmic citations (time code+screen shot).
2) The works from this week, Neuromancer, Ghost in the Shell, and Blade Runner, show use conceptualizations of a future world and its technology, synthetic life, urban sprawl, intensified internet and virtual life, etc. Thinking about our perspective in the present moment of the California in the 2020s, do you think there is still a kind of Techno-orientalist perspective like the 1980s or the 1990s? Discuss how American perspective on Japan and East Asia is expressed and used. Use specific quotes/scenes to discuss.
3) In the works from this week, the role of technology and race are often interwoven, at times with implicit racial stereotypes and/or bias. How do western and oriental characters employ technology both within and without stereotypes? Is there a difference in how race is associated with different types of technology? Who invents and who uses? Use specific quotes/scenes to discuss.
4) Gender is often an overlooked yet important to the idea of the cyberpunk and techno-orientalism. Choose a work from this week and focus on how a characters gender is made to function as part of a technological apparatus or plot device. Does gender function to support the character or is it used to objectify them, or both? Is their gender flexible and is that tied to technology? Use specific quotes/scenes to argue your point.
