Base your argument on ONE of the following topics (which can be your essay’s title):
1] Social media do serious harm in many lives.
2] Social media are a force for good in many lives.
3] Video gaming does serious harm in some lives.
4] Video gaming is essentially harmless.
Organize your argumentative essay according to this 5-paragraph structure:
Paragraph 1: Introduce your topic in a way that gets the reader’s interest (that is, mine) and, in your thesis statement, briefly state the three specific arguments you will focus on in the body of the essay.
Paragraphs 2, 3, and 4 (i.e., the ‘body’ of the essay): Paragraph by paragraph, carefully present each of the three arguments mentioned in your opening paragraph. Be sure to draw your arguments from at least two of the three main types of argument presented in Learning Module #6: Logos, Pathos, and Ethos. Avoid the logical fallacies described in Module #6.
Paragraph 5: Offer clear closing remarks, in which you briefly review your main points, and leave the reader (i.e., me) with some final, interesting thought(s). (However: do not introduce important new information in the closing paragraph.)
a] A ‘References’ list or Bibliography is not compulsory, but you can incorporate information from respected sources if you choose (to support one or more of your arguments)—provided you include proper documentation using APA format—as shown at the Seneca Libraries “Citing Sources” link. (Note: all essays will be screened to detect plagiarism of any kind.)
However build your arguments around your own words and ideas—not those of others. Write to an intended audience of your professors and fellow-students, avoiding any slang language.
b] Use around 700 words. Do not include a cover page. Type your name at the top of p. 1.
c] Double-space your essay. Don’t ignore this instruction—as some did on the Summary assignment. I want to be able to enter readable, helpful corrections and comments.
d] Use full-sentence, full-paragraph form throughout. Proofread carefully. Try hard to reduce or eliminate writing errors pointed out in your ‘Summary’ assignment.
e] Email your essay as a WORD Document (not PDF)—with your name on page 1–no later than noon, Friday, October 7th—to
