1. Read the Excerpts from the Constitution of the United States in Chapter 5 of the Major Problems in African American History book, which documents the Three-Fifths compromise, the end of importatnion of slaves in 1808 (contained in Article I) and the fugitive slave references in Article IV.
2. Read Gererations of Captivity by Ira Berlin (also in Chapter 5 of the Major Problems
book.
3. Write a commentary essay that blends these two readings together. Be specific and complete in you answer that should be answered in at least one or two typed pages.
