1. Concise summary of your analysis of Case #2.
2. Reflections on how your final analysis was influenced by your colleagues’ perspectives.
Upon analysis of the case, the majority opinion of students was to uphold the duty to treat “Bob Jones” and other medically complex and/or severely ill patients, unless patient or employee safety is threatened. In such cases, policy and procedures for immediate transfer of patient care should be followed.
In terms of provider responsibility for patient satisfaction, several students indicated that contributing issues such as transportation, economic hardship, housing needs, medication affordability and accessibility, and/or language or communication barriers should be addressed to improve care and patient experience. This is of critical importance as mental health needs have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. As such, clinicians, administrators, and leadership should be held responsible for factors within their control or influence and resulting clinical outcomes.
