1) Read about the Faculty Mentored Grants, here: https://www.angelo.edu/research/student/undergrad-mentored-grants/
2) Identify a research question that you want an answer to (preferably in your field of study) and a research method to answer the question. Examples from the past few years include:
Nursing: Question: Can music reduce cognitive declines in dementia patients? Methods: 10 weeks of music therapy applied to dementia patients at a nursing home.
Computer Science: Question: Can we evolve an A.I. agent to play the game Hex? Methods: Use a genetic algorithm to teach an artificial neural network how to play the game.
Geology: Question: How can geologic tools and maps improve users spatial understanding of the San Angelo State Park? Methods: Test user perceptions of park maps against reality.
Physical Therapy: Question: What is the impact of color on the motivation of exercisers? Methods: One rep max bench press for 15 students over 5 weeks with the experimenters wearing different, bright-colored shirts.
Animal Science: Question: What is the impact that dewormers have on parasites in sheep? Methods: Use 80 sheep, divide into four groups, and determine the impacts that three dewormers have (including one control group).
3) Choose a faculty member to support your research project. Choose an ASU professor who has knowledge/interest in your research question by researching their CVs, here: http://www.angelo.edu/courses/
Assignment Description: Write a research proposal with the following components:
Use Microsoft Word to publish your document.
Use the sections/headings/information found in the Grant Proposal PDF toward the bottom of this page: http://www.angelo.edu/research/student/undergrad-mentored-grants/
Include the timetable and budget in the proposal rather than attaching them as Appendices.
Keep the entire proposal under 800 words, including Works Cited.
Include three peer-reviewed sources that help define terms, share the context of your research, explain past research findings, and provide a reasoning for your research. Use MLA and include a short Works Cited section to reference these sources.
(Note: you will not actually do the research; your goal is to persuade the reviewer that you can do the research in order to get funding.)
