This means it also needs to do more than agree with or praise a class mate. If you agree with a classmate, explain why, give an example, share what you learned in the readings Research, as a single entity, is defined as “‘to search again’ or ‘to examine carefully'” (Burns, Grove, & Gray, 2015, p.3). The nursing process is defined as “an organized sequence of problem-solving steps used to identify and to manage the health problem of clients” (Timby, 2009, p. 16). Nursing research “is a scientific process that validates and refines existing knowledge and generates new knowledge that directly and indirectly influences nursing practice” (Brown, 2014, p. 124). With their definitions identified it is easy to see how the nursing process and the research process can be similar while also being different. As previously stated the nursing process is a methodology through which nurses assess, diagnose, and implement plans of care. These plans of care are the backbone of nursing and they are created through the use of nursing research. The goal of nursing research is to look at what problems are affecting patients with the greatest degree of significance and examining how to reduce or eliminate those problems. At the end of a research study the data is gathered and then the solution to the problem is evaluated for it’s effectiveness. If the solution is effective in reducing patient suffering then the solution is put into practice once the results are duplicated and deemed safe (Jones, 2014). The nursing process is quite similar in this area. Once the nurse has diagnosed the problem and implemented an intervention the nurse evaluates the effectiveness of the intervention. In this manner the nursing process and the research process are similar; both are focused on examining a problem, looking for/implementing a solution, and then evaluating the results. The difference between the nursing process and the research process lies in their goal or aim and the requisite time frame needed to evaluate. The nursing process is designed to affect immediate change in a patient’s current situation for their betterment. The implementation is immediate, to an extent, and the evaluation occurs soon after. If the intervention does not have the desired affect a different intervention can be tried. These interventions and evaluations can occur rapidly and in a relatively short amount of time. The research process takes significantly longer. Examining a problem, reviewing interventions, evaluating those interventions, gathering data, and examining the trends takes much longer than the nursing process and it is actually expected. Bedside nurses are expected to continually assess, diagnose, implement interventions, and evaluate quickly to help alleviate patient suffering and prevent negative outcomes. Research is expected to take longer due to the fact that is looking at large scale problems across healthcare or patient populations with the direct goal of alleviating future patient suffering.
