1. Locate 5 (five) scholarly sources (written by professionals knowledgeable about the content)
about the focus of your research project. Two of these must be books (as opposed to articles
from journals).
2.
Prepare a list of Works Cited of your 5 sources. Follow the guidelines in the Lunsford Research
book—the list should be in alphabetical order, the list should be double spaced, the list should
list the facts of publication (with correct punctuation) correctly.
3. Select 2 (TWO) of the sources that seem to you most helpful for your project. Look through
them and locate a page or two with relevant information from each of them.
4. Make a copy of or print the pages from each source (this is “the original” that you will turn in
with your assignment).
5. Decide which one or two paragraphs from the pages you will prepare your notes from.
6. After you have selected which paragraphs on which to focus, write (on separate sheets of paper
or on index cards) for each of them a summary of the information, a paraphrase of the
information, and introduce a direct quote of the information.
a. Source 1:
1. paraphrase of the original
2. Summary of the original
3. Direct quotation from the original (introduced by you)
b. Source 2:
7.
1. Paraphrase of the original
2. Summary of the original
3. Direct quotation from the original (introduced by you).
You will now have 6 total notes. On each page or card, include the following:
Your name (so I can give you credit)
The author’s name (upper right hand corner)
The page number (at the conclusion of the note, in parentheses)
The type of note (Summary? Paraphrase? Quote?)
8. Look at your other sources (or just the two you’ve been working with) and prepare 4 additional
note sheets or cards. That is, write 4 more types of notes (summary, paraphrase, note card).
For these, you do not have to include the original. Be sure to include the type of note, the
author’s name, the page number, and your name on each note.
