You are an advertiser, and it is your job to create an advertisement to raise awareness and inform the audience about a mental health topic of your choosing. Use the MTC Reads 2022-23: Mental Health page as inspiration and to help guide your research (https://libguides.midlandstech.edu/mtcreads2022).
Your first step is to choose a mental health topic. This could be a specific mental health condition or the history of mental health in general.
This project will have two parts:
a written document of 600-1000 words presenting relevant facts, information, and research regarding the your chosen topic. Your document should also reflect on why you chose the particular medium you did for the multimodal advertisement. What are the unique affordances or advantages of the medium in conveying your message over others? What are the limitations? Who do you anticipate your audience being, and why is this medium the most effective means to reach that audience?
You should have at least 3 sources (at least 1 should be scholarly/academic). Include a Works Cited page and cite all sources using MLA format and in-text citations.
Although you will not be able to include all the information from this document in the multimodal part of the project, it should still inspire and inform that part of the assignment.
the multimodal advertisement centering on your chosen topic. You will need to choose a medium for the advertisement that is not a traditional alpha-numeric academic essay. Consider different multimodal modes as inspiration: visual (flyers, posters, drawings, collages, illustrations, pamphlets), aural (podcast ad, radio ad), etc. Your advertisement will likely include several of these modes.
Tips for Researching your Topic
You should research information about the historical, social or political context of this topic.
For example, if you choose a specific mental health condition as your topic, you may consider: How has this condition historically been diagnosed or treated? When was this condition added and officially recognized by the DSM? The DSM is a manual used by mental health professionals to guide them in diagnosing and treating mental health conditions. The DSM is continuously revised, and the current version is DSM-5. How has the way the DSM describes the mental health condition youve chosen been revised over the course of its history? What might this indicate about the ways in which our understanding of this condition or mental health in general has changed?
