For this essay, you will present an argument either defending or critiquing one of Nietzsche’s claims.
The rationale for this assignment: One of the ways we are approaching these Existentialist texts is as philosophical arguments for positions. In this essay, you will be practicing this approach to Nietzsche’s work. In addition, you will practice using the principle of charity, constructing arguments, critiquing arguments, and responding to critiques. The essay should have the following components:
First Paragraph
A thesis statement that presents your position. (Note: A thesis statement does not just describe the topic of your essay—it puts forward the claim that your essay will defend.)
Briefly summarize the major points you will make.

State and explain Nietzsche’s position, using quotes and paraphrases of the text and citing the page numbers. Use the Principle of CharityLinks to an external site. to present the most cogent version of his view that you can.
State and explain your reasons in support of or against this position.
State and charitably explain one objection to your argument.
This objection should either provide a counter-argument to your thesis, dispute one of your reasons, or point out a flaw in your reasoning. (In other words, point out a flaw in either the logical validity of your argument or the truth of your premises). To read more about how to do this see, “Criticizing an ArgumentLinks to an external site..”
Reply to this objection. You can incorporate it and refine your thesis claim (like you did in your dialectical essay) or you can refute it using the “Criticizing an Argument” method.
