For this assignment, you are to begin thinking about the Capstone Paper assignment for this class. The first step is to choose a topic within the realm of medical ethics. Some possible topics include the following:
– Informed consent and addiction research
– The role of nurses in physician-assisted suicide
– The permissibility of medical euthanasia
– Truth-telling and patients with mild cognitive impairment and dementia
– Defending gender affirming practices in psychiatric care
– The nature and limits of medical confidentiality
– A moral defense of a single-payer healthcare system
– The moral permissibility of abortion – note that I strongly discourage the ethics literature is so vast (and there is a lot of political discourse out there that doesn’t address the ethical issue itself)

In addition to your topic, you should include at least one journal article you will use in your essay. By journal article, I mean a paper that has been published in a peer-reviewed academic journal like Bioethics, American Journal of Bioethics, AMA Journal of Ethics, Theoretical Medicine & Bioethics, among many others. Peer review is a process where papers are blind reviewed (meaning the reviewers do not know who the author of the paper is while they are reviewing it) by typically two experts in the field of study the paper is written in. This process exists to ensure papers are of high quality, accurate, and relevant to the existing body of work.
Search for an article matching your topic and includes an argument relevant for your purposes. Perhaps your topic is nursing and physician-assisted suicide, so you will want to search for articles that already exist on this topic in order to have a sense of the debate. You will undoubtedly come up with many, but I am asking that you provide me with at least one of them and show me that you’ve read and understand it.
In your treatment of the article, I want you to do four things:
