Sigmund Freud and Friedrich Nietzsche offered virtually identical views of human nature and of the society in which they lived.
Please argue whether or not this statement is true (and why) using only Freuds Civilization and Its Discontents and Nietzsches Beyond Good and Evil as your sources for their ideas. You do not need to do any outside reading for this paper.
You will need to compare the two mens views on the following issues:
According to each one, what is human nature, i.e. how do human beings act and what factors motivate our behavior? In particular, what is the impact of rational thought as opposed to instinctual desires on our behavior according to each one.
Discuss each ones commentary on the society of his day, Europe in the late 19th and early 20th centuries: What values and beliefs of the society of that day did Freud and Nietzsche criticize and, most importantly, why? How well did the values of that society fit with human nature according to each thinker?
What did each one think of religion, i.e., Christianity?
What suggestions did each one offer for his society to change its values and beliefs for the better? This last one is the most difficult question, you will have to interpret what each one says because neither one directly states his suggestions. They are in the books, just do your best to answer.
