Description: The reflections as a researcher assignment provides students with the opportunity to engage in
critical reflection on the nuances of conducting research. Based on course readings and class discussions, they
will reflect on various research paradigms and theories vis-à-vis their own personal beliefs, life views, biases,
professional backgrounds and aspirations. Students will also reflect on the ethical aspects of research and how
they will ensure ethical practices in their own research.
Goals:
Demonstrate understanding of theoretical, philosophical, ethical, and paradigmatic dimensions of
conducting research
Demonstrate use of theoretical, philosophical, ethical, and paradigmatic dimensions as a researcher in
their own research work
19
Critically examine and demonstrate understanding of biases and ethical practices in conducting
research
Expectations: The reflections as a researcher assignment should be about 1600 2200 words long, excluding
references. Students should use peer-reviewed references to advance their discussion throughout the paper.
Although theres no maximum limit, a minimum of ten sources should be used to write the paper. All citations
and formatting should follow APA (7th ed.) guidelines.
As you write this assignment, consider the prompts and layout provided below to organize your discussion.
Introduction: Give a brief and general introduction discussing the background and importance of theoretical,
philosophical, ethical and paradigmatic dimensions in research based on course readings and class discussions.
Theoretical, philosophical, ethical, and paradigmatic principles: Discuss the theoretical, philosophical, ethical,
and paradigmatic principles that you align with most as a researcher. While discussing these principles, cite
appropriate sources to back up your claims.
What theories (e.g., ontological, axiological, epistemological, and so on) underpin your work as a
researcher? Explain how and why.
What paradigmatic principles underpin your practices as a researcher? Explain how and why.
Research vis-à-vis disciplinary and professional practices: Discuss how your research may be linked to your
disciplinary and professional practices. Cite recent and relevant scholarly references in your discussion.
Do you see any disciplinary practices (e.g., in Education, Sciences or Social Sciences) influencing your
work as a researcher? If so, explain how and why.
Do you see any professional practices (e.g., investigating the efficacy of a teaching technique, or
identifying factors that enhance math learning, and the like) influencing your work as a researcher? If
so, explain how and why.
Overcoming biases: Discuss what measures you will take to overcome your personal biases, beliefs, and
ideologies both as a person and researcher.
As suggested above, cite relevant scholarly references to support
your discussion.
Given the multidimensional context of conducting research, how do you situate yourself as a
researcher? How do you plan on overcoming personal biases, beliefs, and ideologies, as a person and
researcher?
Ethical practices: Discuss how you will ensure ethical practices throughout the research process.
Given the complexity of conducting research, how do you plan to ensure ethical practices as a
researcher?
Conclusion: Provide a brief conclusion summarizing the discussion above.
References: Ensure that you cite relevant scholarly sources throughout the paper. Include all references cited
in the paper in a reference list.
