Just a FYI on notable responses to Module Four Canvas Question – Review only
1)I think the FBI’s Data Collection efforts for Use of Force incidents will impact the Procedural Justice System in a few ways. If people got the truth about how many incidents occurred with law enforcement using force, we will finally be able to make them accountable for it. Another impact will be on the law officers, this data will make them be transparent which causes them to be transparent with us. This can be a good thing because we can learn to trust them for providing this data to us. We can also stop being skeptical of them because they’re providing this information. As sheriff Gualtieri said, “when people believe the information, they believe the person who’s delivering the information, then they trust what you’re doing.” They can earn this trust from the communities they work for and with. The FBI’s Data Collection can have a positive impact between police and community relations.
2)After watching the attached video, I feel that the FBI’s Data Collection efforts for Use of Force incidents will impact the Procedural Justice aspect of police and community relations in a positive and impactful way. I feel this way because much like the video was stating on reporting any and all incidents involving shots fired from an officer at a suspect or near a suspect will give analytical data on how often this is occurring. Of course, this may cause the law enforcement workers to be vulnerable, but being transparent is necessary when serving and protecting the public. This means by being transparent, the public builds a trusting bond with law enforcement officers and also demonstrates measured data to understand what is happening in the agencies that participate in this data entry. When discussing the Procedural Justice aspect of police officers, we can see if officers were being considered ethical/fair in judgement. An example of this is a citizen getting pulled over for a minor traffic stop and given a warning instead of put under arrest for such a minor traffic violation. That creates transparency from the officer and relays it down to the individual within the community. The community relations will feel that the Procedural Justice is not overstepping any boundaries and is within reason of fairness. The more agencies submit Use of Force data to the FBI’s Data Collection, the more complete story it tells which in turn can help create innovative ways on reducing such actions and create outlets for more transparency between officers and community relations.
