In this week’s module you will find a link to one of the first speeches ever given by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He gave this speech in the immediate aftermath of the 1955 arrest of Rosa Parks in Montgomery, Alabama. Dr. King was unknown in Montgomery at the time. When he begins his speech you can tell the audience is not certain of his message or its power. But by the end of the speech Dr. King had become the voice of the Movement. Watch that happen in this video.
The video lets you listen to the speech and follow along with closed captions so you can see what he’s saying. As you listen, pay attention not only to what King says but also how the people respond.
This assignment is a standard Reading Response, except that it is a video instead of a reading. I hope you enjoy it. It’s one of the finest speeches Dr. King ever gave, maybe even more powerful than his ‘I Have A Dream’ speech. https://youtu.be/5TmoFoG5P-U
