One goal of this course is to help you develop skills in critically evaluating published reports of psychological research. This assignment focuses on how the media portrays psychological research with a specific focus on popular media. The central questions of this assignment are: 1) How is the material presented? and 2) is the material presented accurately? The material, in this case, is our course material.
A short summary of how to complete this assignment:
Choose a topic from this course that is of interest to you
Choose a type of media source from the list below and find an example of your topic in that media source that has not been already included in class and that includes a portrayal of psychological research (e.g., you cannot use the same TedTalk that was included on a Canvas page for our course).
Complete the template linked at the end of this document. You will need to
Summarize the media sources coverage of the topic related to our course material
Bring in course material and an outside source to evaluate whether the media source is presenting the material in a valid and credible scientific manner.
Upload a digital copy of a Word Document to the Canvas assignment by the due date that includes only your completed template (not these directions). Partial submissions, blank submissions, or submissions of the template will be considered your submission.
Check your Turn It In similarity report for possible issues with your paraphrasing. Learn how to Access your Similarity Report and Interpret your Similarity Report
Media Sources:
Blog post (e.g., someones personal website, not a corporate website like WebMD)
Advertisement (print, online, TV, radio, etc.)
News article (online or print; e.g., New York Times, Washington Post)
Magazine (online or print; e.g., Cosmopolitan, Mens Health)
Pop science website (e.g., Psych Today)
Short, educational video (e.g., TedTalk)
The media source does not need to be only about your topic, but the topic should be sufficiently present for you to analyze and it should emphasize content that could be backed by research (this is what youre evaluating).
The key is that you need to be bringing in scholarly sources to evaluate the communication of scientific research findings within a media source. For the evaluation,
PSY385: Psychology of Gender
Gavac
you should bring in scholarly sources to basically fact-check explicit communication about a topic
Topics
You may choose any topic from this course that is of interest to you.
Your specificity will depend somewhat on what the media source covers.
What should your media evaluation include?
Summarize the Media Source.
The type of source (e.g., book, article, TedTalk) and include a link to the material.
The content and major conclusions of the source. Your summary should be concise but detailed; there is likely more than one important point. Make sure your reader understands what is being communicated in the media source. This section should be about 4 8 sentences.
Evaluate the creators credentials.
What are the credentials of the person (or persons) who created the content?
Do they hold an advanced degree (e.g., Ph.D. or M.D.) from an accredited university in a relevant field (e.g., psychology, psychiatry, sociology, family studies, neuroscience; likely not botany, art history)? What makes them an expert in the field?
Is the creator a journalist who has interviewed researchers and is sharing their summary of the research or their own opinions? Are they a credible source for presenting the material (e.g., they have a background in the field, won awards for reporting in that area)?
Check the box that indicates whether you think the creator(s) is/are qualified to communicate about this topic and specify why. Your explanation should be about 2 sentences.
Assess the quality of the evidence
Check the box or boxes that reflect what kind of evidence is being used by the creator(s) to make their points.
Indicate where your creator(s) gets information from. This could be scholarly sources that are cited, personal research experience, interviews, recommendations from professionals, etc. Look for citationsis the creator referencing scholarly sources (e.g., journal articles, textbooks) or popular science sources or something else?
Indicate whether you find the quality of evidence strong enough to support the arguments and specify why or why not. Your explanation should be about 3 4 sentences.
Evaluation in relation to other research
Is the content consistent with what weve learned in class about the topic? This is where you bring in course material (i.e., textbook, micro-lectures, chapter lectures). Provide at least one example, citing course materials. This section
PSY385: Psychology of Gender
Gavac
should be about 3 5 sentences.
Is the content consistent with published, peer-reviewed research on the topic? This is where you bring in outside sources. Provide at least one example, citing a scholarly source. This section should be about 3 5 sentences.
What is your conclusion? Is the science presented in the source strong and credible so that one can believe the conclusions? Or are there fundamental problems with the science and/or its presentation so that the media source isnt to be believed? This section should be at least 2 3 sentences.
References in APA 7 formatting
You should have a least three references: your media source, course material, outside scholarly source
In-text citations in APA 7 formatting
Scholarly citations
You need to bring in at least 2 scholarly sources that are not your media source and integrate them into your analysis of the media source.
One of the sources must be from our course material (e.g., textbook, discussion readings, micro-lectures).
One of the scholarly sources must be from outside our course materials.
What is a scholarly source?
For this assignment, scholarly sources are considered journal articles or books in psychology, sociology, and other related academic fields . The scholarly source should report research findings, not an opinion piece.
Magazine and newspaper articles are not considered scholarly sources (but might be the sources you evaluate). Do not use websites (unless it is your media source) or textbooks (other than the text for this course) for these sources.
Check out our Quick Guide to APA for information about Scholarly Sources and finding them! Our textbook is also loaded with references; use those leads and then read the primary sources. Or directly check the citations that the author of your source offers.
In order to receive any credit for this assignment, you must bring in scholarly sources for a scientific evaluation of the material. You will not earn partial credit for simply summarizing the sources coverage and/or the creators credentials.
