Due Oct 10, 11:59 PM BACKGROUND: The theme of a work is the main message,
insight, or universal truth beyond the surface. Analysis of theme involves dissecting that concept, thought, opinion or
belief that a text expresses to explore how it is developed through details and
the writer’s craft. TASK:
Choose either Chaucer’s “The Pardoner’s Tale” or “The Wife’s Tale” and
determine a theme. Develop an essay that
explains and analyzes how that theme is developed throughout the
narrative. Use at least two of
the literary terms (from our chart) that fit well with your thesis and the
story. However, the theme is the focus,
not the terms. Therefore, to say the author uses irony, foreshadowing, and
suspense in the story is not enough. Examine what the theme is and how the
terms are used to get that across. Also be careful to avoid plot summary.
REQUIREMENTS: The essay should include:
1. Introduction,
3 body paragraphs (with three points/details to support the theme), conclusion
2. At
least 3 quotes from the story Your quotes should not total more than 10% of the
overall word count!
3. MLA
Internal citations for the quotations
4.. typed
and must be at least 500 words
5. NO RESEARCH. Do not look up any outside interpretations.
This will only skew your opinion and tempt you to plagiarize.
