In our readings for this unit, we will be reading different opinions about the purpose of education. We will also read a bit about connections between race, social class, and education in the United States. We will discuss and debate the idea of an opportunity gap involving resources and affecting student outcomes in American education.
In addition, in The Other Wes Moore, we will see how two people with the same name in the same city can have very different lives due to their life circumstances.
In this essay, you have two choices.
1. Create an argument about the existence (or non-existence) of an opportunity gap in education in this country. You will not use personal experience but research from at least three articles I give you or ones you find through research.
2. In your essay, answer the question, What Is School for? as the articles from The New York Times do. You must come up with an original way of expressing your ideas. In this essay, you may use personal experiences, but they must be provable and you will also use research from at least three articles.
In your introduction, give background information about the general topics you choose to write about, and explore how those topics are connected. Also, make sure you have an argumentative thesis statement. Your body paragraphs should connect the topics you introduce in your introduction and work to prove your thesis statement.
