During this lesson will examine the creation of two critical public insurance programs (Medicare and Medicaid) to provide health insurance coverage for elders, persons with disability, and poor people. These two programs have been operating for over 50 years. The Kaiser Family Foundation has produced a video that provides a brief history of both programs, including an examination of the health care, social and political landscape that gave rise to them, the significant ways each program has evolved over five decades and the important roles they play in the U.S. health care system.
This discussion post is an opportunity for us to explore our prior knowledge and initial impressions before we get involved in the lesson instruction.

In short, what interests you regarding the information you are gaining from viewing the video. As you review this information also think about the importance of having health insurance (and the implications of not having it) and the possible ramifications if Medicare and Medicaid did not exist.
