Anwer questions 1 and 2 then respond to the student responses with 100 word minimum responses
Q1:
Based on your program of study, read the ACA or ASCA Code of Ethics located in the topic resources. Provide examples of dual relationships when these codes do not give definitive guidance about the appropriateness of the relationship. How should a counselor decide to enter or not enter into a dual relationship?
Student response 1:
The ACA guidelines give many examples of multiple relationships that are prohibited in one way or another including, sexual relationships, previous sexual relationships, sexual relationships with past clients in the past 5 years and friends or family members where the counselor cannot remain objective. (A.5.a, A.5.b, A.5.c, A.5.d). There is one relationship specific to school counselors that I beleive would effect me that there is not clear guidance on.
It is a common occurance for school staff to also be coaaches or support staff in extra curricular activities. Now, in this specific scenario there is not a element of choosing to engage in this relationship or not. If I am coaching my desired sport, diving, it would not be right of me to tell a student they cannot join the team due to a multiple relationship, it would not be fair to the student. Instead of seeing the situation as problematic it could be another avenue to build a relationship with the student. According to Corey, Corey & Corey (2019) multiple relationships are not always bad, they can offer a mentor-mentee relationship where both parties benefit from knowing eachother professionally and personally. Ultimately, if the relationship is of non-sexual nature (which in school counseling it undoubtedly should never be) the counselor should use their best discretion. If they think they can seperate the two relationships and remain unbias in all situations and the student is on board then I see no issue with the multiple relationship. In fact, it may be ineveitable in certain circumstances, there may be students that I work with that I know outside of the school setting via their parents or my job as a trainer at the local training facility. It is best to maintain healthy communication with the student and set boundaries in each setting as a coach and a counselor. Reference:

After reviewing the ASCA code of ethics and chapter 7 of the textbook asscoiated with this course, I found two standards that explain multiple relationships and what to do to avoid them in the school counseling profession. According to standard A.1.l (ASCA, n.d.), school counselors shpould maintain and prohibit sexual or romantic relationships with students regardless of the students age of consent in the practicing state. This also includes electronic relationships. Depending on the state in which the counselor is practicing, the age of consent may be younger than other states. This does not matter the code of ethics provided by the American Counseling Association prohibits any sexual or romantic relationship with students. In chapter 7 of the text Corey presents a chart of ethical codes (p.258), the standard is that of A.5.b is listed and states, that counselors shall maintain professional relationships at all times. School counselors should also take precaution through informed consent, supervision, and consultation. School counselors are to document situations that exceed conventional parameters. The documentation should include reasoning for interaction, nature of interaction, benefits of reaction, and possible consequences for both the student and counselor, positive or negative. Examples of these relationships could include, current or previous students and students family members. As a school counselor and an adult avoiding sexual or romantic relationships with your students is highly reccomended to ensure ethical practice.
