TASK ATTACHED BELOW
In Chapter 9 of the Saylor text, Mastering Public Relations, there is a formula that is used by many organizations to analyze their position in the marketplace as part of their research for a PR campaign. It is usually called a SWOT analysis; the acronym stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Threats and Opportunities (see the chart on page 99).
StrengthsWhat abilities and resources does your organization have that can be used to achieve its mission or resolve a communication problem?
WeaknessesWhat abilities and resources does your organization lack that interfere with its success?
OpportunitiesWhat are some opportunities your organization could take advantage of to be successful?
ThreatsWhat barriersboth external and internalexist that would get in the way of your organizations success?
Remember that in some cases, weaknesses can be strengths, and threats can be opportunities. For example: If your organization has high overhead that affects the bottom line, then downsizing may be necessary. If it is not well known, you would take advantage of opportunities to promote it.
Question for you: Using the same PR campaign and organization as you wrote about in previous discussion question, conduct a preliminary SWOT analysis. Outline each element of your SWOT in at least two sentences each. Better yet, expand your PR toolkit by creating and sharing an Animoto or Prezi presentation or Pinterest board of your analysis.
